The Vampire Diaries finally returned to The CW with new episodes tonight! Elena (Nina Dobrev) and Damon (Ian Somerhalder) travel to Denver to visit Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen). Stefan (Paul Wesley) stays behind with Ric (Matt Davis) in order to try and draw out his homicidal vampire hating alter-ego to find out where he hid the last remaining white oak stake.
Stefan needs the final stake because he promised to give it to Klaus (Joseph Morgan).
The other reason Stefan stays behind was so that Elena could be alone with Damon and figure out whether or not she has feelings for him.
The white oak stakes are the only weapon that can kill an Original. Since the Originals created all vampires, their deaths will mean the death of every vampire that descended from them.
There were some great surprises in this episode, including the return of Rose (Lauren Cohan) who communicated with Jeremy so that Damon could figure out who sired her. Rose flirts with Damon and tells Jeremy that she was sired by a vampire named Mary.
She also tells Jeremy to tell Damon and Elena that they should be together. And she's right! But of course Jeremy doesn't reveal that information right away because he thinks it's dangerous for Elena to be with Damon.
But trouble follows Elena, Damon and Jeremy. Kol shows up and tries to kill Damon twice. Elena is also injured but not severely. By the time Damon and Elena find Rose's sire, Kol has already killed her.
Damon and Elena talk about their relationship and as usual Damon gets angry but not before they do a lot of kissing.
Fans also found out that Caroline (Candice Accola) has been secretly seeing Tyler (Michael Trevino) while he's been away trying to break his sire bond to Klaus. Tyler and Caroline seem to be getting along well until he finds out that Caroline kept the drawing that Klaus made for her. After he asks Caroline about it, he leaves her house angry.
Caroline gets Matt (Zach Roerig) to help her keep Rebekah (Claire Holt) distracted so she won't tell Klaus about their rendezvous. Rebekah also finds out that her mother Esther (Alice Evans) is still alive. Rebekah is understandably angry with her mother for trying to kill her and her brothers. But Esther tells Rebekah that she's dying because the link between her and the power of the Bennett bloodline was severed when Abbey (Persia White) was turned into a vampire. Esther apologizes to Rebekah and then she seems to die.
And unexpectedly, Stefan reveals to Klaus that he has regained his free will. Klaus takes the news surprisingly well, when he and Rebekah come to collect the stake. But it is revealed that Esther's spirit has inhabited Rebekah's body. This surprise comes to light when she takes Ric to the cave to retrieve the stake.
There were a lot of great moments between Damon and Elena in this episode of The Vampire Diaries, which made many fans happy. The episode also featured "Never Let Me Go" by Florence + the Machine from her latest album Ceremonials.
Next week's episode will air at a special day and time Sunday April 29th at 8pm/7c on The CW.
