Our U.S. government gave us the internet, but not without first giving it to the private sector. We've all had a lot of fun with it, and now use it for everything & anything, but the private sector hasn't been investing very much in security. So the government has been getting more involved in internet security and they have a new security testing program. They have a super computer set up where tests can be run on it to see what it would take to crash the whole system. Tests like this can not be run on the actual real system, of course, LOL.
Even college kids can send their own tests to it from their laptops to run security tests, to try to break the internet. I hope this helps improve the internet's security so a cyber attack doesn't stop our modern civilization dead in its tracks, someday (or rip us off one at a time)!
Here's the segment about it as they showed it on PBS Newshour, if you want to see it all. You can watch the video or read it as a transcript.

(Now if we can just change the nature of terrorism .. that's been around a lot longer than money)
Yes, my book does cover that in some detail. A number of factors is involved.
You might notice that money provides most of the motives for terrorism and most, if not all, of the means by which it is carried out. (How does one gain explosives, example. Do you really want to make some from scratch? How do you get the ingredients?)
Terrorism is political. Politics came about after money developed. Money preceded politics. Money is necessary for government to exist.
Terror exists without politics. Terror can be used in personal interactions as in a husband terrorizing his wife or a parent terrorizing a child. But that isn't terrorism in the political sense.
Terrorists attacking the cyberspace? Remember California and the electric grid a few years back? There were no terrorists, the grid was down, there was no internet,no computer running, still those "horrible Liberals" from California did not vanish. Neither their Conservative counterparts.
Only that time there were no terrorist. Probably it was Enron... Probably it was a government test...
Bottom line, they survived. o will the Internet...
