2 Broke Girls season 1 continues with episode 21, "And the Messy Purse Smackdown." As the tax deadline approaches, Caroline finds out that Max has never filed.
Is Oleg Changing?
Caroline asks Max for gum after having onions in her street meat, which leads to her commenting on how her life has changed in the past year. Max's purse is a mess, and Caroline finds an envelope for their cupcake business—with a $200 check inside. That leads to Max announcing to the diner that her waitress days are over...right before she goes to serve more coffee.
Earl's drinking brandy at the end of the night in honor of Tax Day the next day as he finishes up his taxes. As Max picks his food up from Oleg, she notices that he doesn't call out the order with his usual remarks, even though there's clearly something for him to say. He explains that since he's with Sophie, he's holding them back for her. Since Max's bag is a mess, Caroline takes out stamps from hers for Earl, but then offers to look over his papers to see if she can help him get more back and mail it for him.
Once the girls get home, Max asks Caroline to help her with her taxes, admitting she wasn't going to file before she saw the check. Now that their business is getting real, she's changed her mind. Sophie stops by, with a dig at Kim Kardashian ("No, I'm not Kim Kardashian. No, I work for a living."), and it's clear she's not as serious about Oleg as he is about her. She's planning to start dating again, and Oleg is not someone she wants to be serious about. After all, she tells them she needs him in her life like she needs breast implants ("which is not at all").
Caroline discovers that Max's finances are a mess since she's never filed before. Max ends up throwing out all the useless papers on the coffee table as they get ready to head out to get her taxes done. Oleg and Sophie stop by to show off a gift he gave her, and Caroline refuses to let Max join them in going out. As they leave, Sophie tells them this means nothing.
2 Broke Girls Do Taxes
At the tax place, Caroline reminds Max that she can help—and it turns out that Kyle is going to be no help. He obviously shouldn't be handling finances of any kind. Caroline finally steps in and refuses to let Max risk her future. Even Kyle admits she should be handling this. Max wants to just give up on filing until next year, but Caroline refuses to let her and says she should at least file an extension, which they can pick up at the post office when they mail Earl's papers. So where are his papers? They were thrown out when Max cleared off the coffee table. It's the first thing Caroline has lost besides her virginity.
As they stand in front of the dumpster, Caroline doesn't want to get in because then she'll "literally be white trash." She doesn't really have much of a choice, and Max helps her in before joining her. Of course this leads to the girls arguing, with Max saying that Caroline's been dumping on her all day about filing taxes and Caroline pointing out that she wouldn't be in this situation if Max had an organized bag and could find a stamp. Caroline wouldn't have offered hers and then looked at Earl's return. They do throw some food at each other, which in the end leads to them finding their garbage.
They end up in line at the post office, and when Max sees a woman with a baby, a blind man, and her drug dealer with their taxes done, she decides she wants to get her taxes done, not file an extension. That leads to Caroline running home to get her papers while Max gets help from everyone in line to fill out the forms. Caroline gets there just in time, and Max gets her envelope in at the last second.
