It breaks my heart to see how many children need help to learn to read, and their parents simply do not have the financial resources to do that. There are so many distractions today, that it's practically a full time job to supervise a child, and to make sure he stays focused on the task at hand.
When I was their age, things were simple: either study, or help my parents with household chores. Since these were the only two options, studying was quite attractive. And that wasn't because my parents were tyrants. There simply wasn't anything else to do: no television, computers or video games.
I can actually understand why kids today don't want to learn: there are so many more interesting things to do. If I could learn the basics, I'd start playing computer games myself. But it's the parents' job to make sure the kids stay focused, and, at the very least, learn to read first.
