Continuing on with with our famous American Chiefs, you will certainly recognize some of the names. Included is a brief history & legacy that they have given us.

Cinon Mataweer - Kumeyaay 1800s (Shaman)

Not much information exists concerning Cinon Mataweer, except that he was a Shaman & resided at the Barona Indian Reservation. More is know about the tribe Kumeyaay than about this Indian Chief Shaman. He is known as the last great medicine man & the photo shows him in the sacred owl & hawk feather headdress of the tolache medicine man.

Chief Tecumseh, Shawnee - Warrior & Statesman

CHIEF TECUMSEH PORTRAIT

Leader of the Shawnee & a large tribal confederacy known as the Tecumseh's Confederacy which opposed the US during Tecumseh's War of 1812. He was constantly exposed to war from a child on into adulthood. Tecumseh visioned establishing an independent American Indian Nation & worked endlessly to recruit Tribes to the Confederacy. He left a great legacy behind & many memorials to his name can still be found.

Chief Black Hoof, Shawnee c. 1740 - 1831

Catecahassa or Black Hoof was the head civil chielf of the Shawnee Indians in the Ohio Country. He was a member of the Mekoche division of the Shawnees. A fierce warrior during the early wars, but later decided that American Indians needed to adapt culturally to prevent total decimation. He was greatly responsible from keeping the Shawnee Nation from joining the Tecumseh's War - which became part of the War of 1812. He also never signed a removal treaty thereafter & continued to lead his Tribe till he died in Ohio.

I feel very deeply for these people, wronged, plundered, exploited and abused. As were the African people in the age of colonialism. In fact, it embarrasses me to be a British/European descendant, living in Africa as I do.

I too share a remorse about our history in these areas.

We cannot change our heritage, but we can try to make a change in how we now serve others.

We cannot change our heritage, and that is a good thing especially when we actually receive it in its fullness.. On the flip side of the coin, we can not give the things we have not received. Oh, how I could really expound on this, but that is a post for another time. Anyway, when we really get in contact with ourselves, who we really are, and really love ourselves, loving and serving others won't be a problem. This is all in line with "Be the change'.

I agree with you totally. Too much time being wasted on insignificant things when there is so much that needs to be done. "Be the change" sets very well with me, because it communicates a positive message, I adopted it on my profile here at Gather many years ago.

I especially remember Chief Crazy Horse and General Custer...General Custer really paid the price for being disobedient...he was warned...Thanks for such rich history.

I understand, and can see that a lot of work has been put into this. Some of the folk I have never heard of before, and I too am learning something. I especially mentioned Chief Crazy Horse because He is the only one of these that I can relate to. it comes from the battle at "Little Big Horn", and my husband and I would often speak of it...General Custer was such a "lifted" high headed man as we could say in todays times, until he would not even listen to his scout. He was so polished, no one could tell him anything. It was Chief Crazy Horse that defeated him. When I saw that name on your list, I remembered the incident. They made a movie behind this, and I believe it was Dustin Hoffman who played the role of the scout for custer and was named "Little Big Man". If I stepped ahead of you in your presentation, pardon me, I did not really mean to. It just happened that when I saw you list of chiefs this one, that I had first hand information on jumped out at me. I will be more patient next time, promise.

I think the Native Americans have been treated so badly, to this day they are still fighting for their land in parts of America. I read the book Wounded Knee when I was in H.S. and it affected me so much. What a shame we did these terrible things to people who owned this land before us.

Sometimes I am ashamed of the history that is presumed American ... in many many venues it was just another pilage & mass takeover.
