They say that pride precedes a fall

When pride is rendered as a vice

But I have felt it once or twice

Pride in my children, after all


Pretentiousness, as I recall

Is also “pride” which should suffice

To say that pride precedes a fall

When pride is rendered as a vice


Be proud when accolades befall

For noble deeds, to be concise

Pride earned is not to me a vice

Conceitedness defeated Saul

The quote you mention is derived from Proverbs 16:18, a contraction of two clauses in the King James translations.

I think the words "false pride" pride that puffeth up the ego in a hurtful way is the one to watch out for but a positive pride seems to instill a certain confidence and good feeling about accomplishments and is good ...and John, your poem was excellent in showing the difference...great work

Hmmn! Pride is a word not used much these days. In the news in the papers and in the networks, and among commentators it seems as if the trend word for pride is hubris, i.e. the technological hubris of building the Titanic (the pride of technological progress). Hubris is a Greek word, the language of the original New Testament letters. I, too, like the allusion to Saul who became known as Paul the apostle. The gospel defeated his pride in the law, so pride covers a lot, from the spiritual to the technical. You've written a very moral poem. In between the lines it speaks about humility.
