After a week spent performing at an IPL season opener, shopping with Katy Perry, and promoting the release of the Teri Meri Kahani trailer, Priyanka Chopra took a break to do a bit of charity work. Specifically the actress donned some safety gloves and grabbed a rake to help clean the Yamuna River.
Priyanka started her day at the Taj Mahal, where she took a tour and learned about the environmental concerns facing India's most famous landmark. The Taj Mahal is situated on the banks of the Yamuna, one of the tributaries of the Ganges River, so it was only a short walk to the river itself. Priyanka spent additional time helping to clean debris from the river. Well, a little bit anyways--at least one report claims she spent more time fixing her makeup than she did cleaning. Suppose it's the thought that counts eh?
So why the sudden charity act from PC? Is she genuinely concerned about the state of the Yamuna or is this a bit of show from her PR team to deflect the negative press she's been getting thanks to the stories linking her to Shahrukh Khan? She certainly didn't look like she was ready to put in a hard day's work out of doors: she wore a white kurta with open toed shoes, dozens of silver bracelets, had her hair down (and perfectly coiffed, natch), and a full face of makeup. She couldn't have been less appropriately dressed if she tried. It looked more as if she wanted to look pretty for the cameras while she held some cleaning equipment and then get back into her air conditioned car as soon as humanly possible.
The cleaning spree was a nice gesture and if it resulted in a handful of junk being removed from the river then all the better, but maybe next time Priyanka Chopra decides she's feeling charitable she can emphasize substance rather than style.
