A potentially awkward situation has developed between Justin Bieber and his protégée, Carly Rae Jepsen. The 2 artists are competing with each other, and it seems Carly is winning. She just beat Justin out for #1 hit single on iTunes in the UK. Oops. Awkward or not?
Recently, Justin who discover Jepsen and signed her on his Schoolboy Records label tweeted his fans a message about her quick and almost unprecedented success.
"So i get up today and #BOYFRIEND is #2 on ITUNES chart in the UK!! Incredible!" he wrote excitedly. "Who is #1?? My own artist @carlyraejepsen...hmmmm."
Hmmm, indeed. In just a few months, Carly Rae Jepsen has become a household name. And now she's bested her famous patron in a competition for the same prize. That's pretty shocking--especially since Boyfriend was so eagerly awaited and so intensively promoted and advertised. So how does Carly feel about her "friendly competition" with the man who discovered her. Does she consider herself and the Biebs a classic example of frenemies? Not really.
"The fact that we are able to have that friendly competition is blowing my mind," mused Carly. "I wouldn't be here without his support and his help, and he is so great about it. He's just happy for me, which is nice to see."
Well said. But would she be willing to abdicate her hard-won number one spot on iTunes to placate--er--to honor JB.
"We can share it: two #1s!" she replied, jokingly.
Also well said.
Oh well, perhaps Carly Rae Jepsen and Justin Bieber will actually ascend together to the #1 spot in the near future since they've already recorded a duet. Of course, what will happen in the future will happen. Right now, she's just dealing with her life-altering success.
You can watch Carly dishing on her success as well as her friend and patron JB on the video below. Stay tuned.
Note: Interestingly, Justin Bieber has recorded a duet with Carly Rae Jepsen before recording one with Selena Gomez.
Oops.
