It's How I Met Your Mother season seven, and a lot has happened over the years. But rather than some lame clip show from over the years, HIMYM sums up everything with a little bit of a twist. Every three years the guys get together to watch the Star Wars trilogy in full; it's otherwise known as "Trilogy Time."
Barney and Quinn
Before it's Star Wars time, there's a bit of a mystery. A guy across the street has noticed that Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) goes outside at exactly 8 p.m. every night, takes a few steps, and smiles. Turns out that's where he's farting, so he doesn't have to do it in front of Quinn (Becki Newton).
Otherwise things are going just okay for Barney and Quinn. The only problem? She got rid of all her stuff except for her mugs, and that doesn't make Barney happy, because he wants to assert his dominance as a man with his mugs. All the girls hate the idea, especially Robin (Cobie Smulders) who reminds herself that she's still alone -- and so do the guys.
How I Met Your Mother "Trilogy Time"
But Barney never ever imagined that he'd be living with a girl.
The Star Wars plan started back in 2003 though, before Barney entered the lives of his best friends. Back in 2003, Marshall (Jason Segel) and Ted (Josh Radnor) were in college and avoiding studying for econ. They dreamed of living together, Marshall a lawyer with a mustache and Lily (Alyson Hannigan) pregnant, Ted with an English girlfriend, played by Robin, with dreads.
But in the real 2003, life is nothing like that for the guys. Rather, Marshall is still not in law school, and Barney is in their lives. And as Barney does throughout the years, he kicks a girl out of the apartment and declares, "And they never saw her again. Wassup?" And that's exactly what Barney plans on doing in another three years, and another three years after that.
Not so for the other fellas. Marshall imagines being an environmental lawyer -- and cash and prizes from Wheel of Fortune. Ted sees himself married to a super rich and fancy French lady.
But again, How I Met Your Mother fans know that's not what happened in 2006. In fact, that's the year that Lily left Marshall. But Ted was happy, because he was with Robin. As such, Marshall imagines a dire future for himself; Lily ends up pregnant but with a douche with a mustache and a trucker hat. Then there's Ted, who imagines banging Robin into marriage.
Fast forward to 2009 and it's one of Ted's worst years ever on HIMYM. He's not with Robin, he was left at the altar, and he had a failed architectural firm. But Barney had a bit different "Trilogy Time" experience; he wasn't there because he was secretly dating Robin -- who ends up dressed in the Storm Troopers outfit in Barney's apartment as she hides from the other guys.
As for imagining 2012, Ted still believes he'll have a wife. "If it hasn't happened by then, something is seriously wrong with me."
And in 2012, Ted finally loses hope for the following three years. He doesn't look to Marshall for inspiration, even though Marshall has fulfilled every one of his wishes, including Lily getting pregnant.
But Ted thinks he can count on Barney always walking in with a random girl. Except Barney, finally, no longer agrees.
He wants to be with Quinn, now and maybe even forever. He returns to his apartment and starts breaking his old mugs. And as they hug and make up, he farts in front of Quinn. He's finally being himself, completely and utterly, with her -- and now Quinn can stop crop dusting on the patio.
So what happens in 2015? The guys are back to watching Star Wars, but Ted has brought a girl with him, a sweet little baby girl. And so things should start to finally get on track for HIMYM's leading man.
