Clothes are considered as one of the most important necessities of man. Since the earlier times people use clothes as protection from wind, sun, and insulation from the cold. In some cultures, clothes are also worn for ornamentation, cultural identity, and for identification of social position. People from different age groups, both men and women, buy and wear clothes. Clothes include not only dresses, shirts, jeans and other cloth material but also hair decorations and footwear.
As was aforementioned, wearing of clothes has been ingrained in our history. Anthropologists believed that man began wearing clothes around 100,000-500,000 years ago. Originally, clothes were worn for the purposes of protection. Animal skin, furs, grasses, leaves, bones, shells, and other natural elements were then used in the manufacture of clothing. Over the years that followed, with man's discovery of the advantages of woven fibers over animal hides, various methods of creating clothes were also discovered. From these methods, various types of clothing were made and used not only as protection from the elements but also as tools to add beauty to one's appearance.
As mentioned, clothes-from hair decoration to footwear-are also being used today for ornamentation. A number of individuals were surveyed to identify the reasons why they dress up for said purpose. The results of said survey were posted online. Among the reasons provided by the participants are the following: life is too short to blend in, fashion is a method of expressing their self, everyone deserves to look best at all times, and because glamour is for everyone, and not only for the rich and famous.
Psychologists and behaviorists, on the other hand, also provided a number of reasons why people love dressing up. Primary among these reasons is to cover sensitive parts of the body. Though primitive societies did not deem this necessary, the society, at one point in time, dictated that some parts of the body should be covered and be not displayed in public. Another reason cited by said professionals is for protection-harsh weather conditions, bodily harm, and fellow men necessitated clothes.
Clothes, as aforementioned, are also worn to add beauty to one's appearance. This desire to look beautiful through clothes has been practiced not only today but even during the ancient times. In Europe, for example, royals hold balls and parties just to show off their latest dresses, costumes, hair decoration, and footwear. Lastly, clothes are also being worn for purposes of identity. This last reason has been practiced since the establishment of social statuses in the society. What clothes one wear would identify whether he/she is from the upper class or from the lower one.
Clothes have indeed been a part of our history-and it definitely will continue to be a part of the future. With the various functions it served in the past, it sure will serve more purposes in the future. From hair decorations to footwear, one will not deny that he/she takes time to choose which one to wear in a given time and occasion.
