Easter Confection... errr... ahem...confession....

OK, I confess...this foodie who loves to eat fresh food and doesn't steer too often or too far from the straight & narrow-homemade-from-scratch path is guilty of being passionate about Peeps.

There!

Now you know.

For some reason they have been hard to come by this year.  Usually you see them a month or so before Easter...this year we looked and looked everywhere and couldn't find them...

While in town today, Anthony found a good selection of them at one of our local bulk food stores and bought one box of each color and type they had plus some chocolate covered chick Peeps...

I HAD to eat one of the chocolate covered ones right then and there.

Blame it on Anthony.

That's my story and I'm sticking to it!

Ha! Normally we buy them early and parcel them out little by little, but we might have to make a sacrifice and eat more of them more often until they're gone... Yeah, thank goodness we only buy them once a year...

I would've done the same thing, Sonia! Peeps are made nearby - in Bethlehem, PA - and we see them for a month or two before Easter - at CVS, Walgreens, Riteaid, Shop Rite, you name it. Everywhere. Next year if you have trouble finding them let me know. So easy to come by around here.

I saw a whole segment on them on The Chew today. They are only made in one factory, all the time. They make millions of them for the holiday. Very interesting segment. Might be a video of it available on The Chew. com.

I saw a segment in the Food channel sometime ago about the factory that makes Peeps and how they got started...It was interesting...Of course we have to help them stay in business ;-)

I saw them everywhere today - CVS, Stop & Shop, Shop Rite, they all had huge displays. I resisted and didn't get any. Also saw a display for the new chocolate-covered jelly beans from Jelly Belly. Didn't get any as I made a batch of chocolate-covered matzo and it was waiting for me at home.

LOL! I have a friend who loves Peeps. When she had the flu, Peeps were the only things she could keep down...poor little Chickies!

I believe there might be one or two DD in Honolulu, but we don't have those artery clogging things here on this island...I don't care for either DD or KK donuts...I prefer the Portuguese malasadas which are popular here...YUM...
I'm not into sugary things at all, Sonia. Other than for Dutch salt licorice, that is, and such is not really sugary.

We don't have malasadas - at least, not that I know of.

Not familiar with Dutch salt licorice...sounds interesting. Malasadas are a type of donut brought to Hawaii by Portuguese immigrants over 100 years ago... they are very popular here.
The licorice is addictive - be warned.

When I'm in Massachusetts again I'll try to find some malasadas - there are large Portuguese communities there.

Malasadas were the way that the Portuguese women would use up the flour, butter, etc. before the season of Lent. Fat Tuesday is known in Hawaii, as Malasada Tuesday, but they are so good that they are now available all year round...

the best I've ever had are squarish pillows of nice fluffly as air dough filled with mango or Bavarian cream ;-)
