When the American Idol 2012 top 8 results show concludes tonight on FOX, another hopeful's dream of winning the competition will come to an end. But following on the heels of a mostly solid night of 80s music, which wanna-be Idol deserves the boot?
It may be easier to talk about who probably won't get the axe first. Despite a bottom-three finish last week, rockin' country girl Skylar Laine kicked it up two notches during last night's performance show. She delivered a near-perfect duet with rocker Colton Dixon first, and then ended the show with a stellar, tear-inducing version of the inspirational tune "Wind Beneath My Wings."
Also probably safe? The aforementioned Dixon, as well as balladeer Jessica Sanchez, church singer Joshua Ledet, and the ever-individual Phillip Phillips, who all earned praise for their respective offerings.
That leaves three hopefuls potentially up for elimination. Although DeAndre Brackensick (and his sick falsetto) earned plenty of praise last night, he's the reigning pick of the Vote for the Worst website, which encourages viewers to, as is obvious, vote for the weakest link in a given competition. So it's clear that not everyone is in love with his vocals and his hair-flipping style.
The remaining likely endangered singers are Elise Testone and Hollie Cavanagh. Both ladies earned criticism for their 80s night performances--Elise for song choice, Hollie for her execution--and both have a history of winding up near the bottom of the bunch post-vote. Hollie survived last week's bottom two, so she may well be the odd girl out tonight. It would be a shame, since she has a tremendously powerful voice, but judges Jennifer Lopez, Randy Jackson and Steven Tyler haven't cared much for her work in recent weeks, so it wouldn't be a surprise.
Watch the American Idol 2012 top 8 results show tonight at 8 PM on FOX. The Wanted and Kelly Pickler will perform.
