April 4 marked '80s night on American Idol 2012 as the young contestants tackled a series of tunes from the decade of big hair and legwarmers. Skylar Laine closed out the evening in fine fashion with a beautiful rendition of a song from the movie "Beaches" that left Jennifer Lopez near tears.
When asked what she missed most about being at home, Skylar cited her friends, family, cooking, and of course, her gun. But still, she wisely recognized that she'd been given a once in a lifetime opportunity on Idol.

Later during her mentoring session, Skylar admitted that landing in the bottom three last week had shaken her confidence. She originally settled on the peppy "9 to 5," but her rendition of "Wind Beneath My Wings" blew the mentors away, and they encouraged her to go with the slow Bette Midler tune instead. Gwen likened her voice to "ice cream" and said if she can bring it all together, it could be a "wow moment" for Skylar.
The country gal sparkled alone on stage in a long pink gown as she put her balladeering skills on display for the first time. She poured a tremendous amount of passion into the well-known song and brought the judges to their feet.
Randy Jackson said "wow, Skylar, wow, wow" and praised her look. He went on to call it her best performance to date. Jennifer Lopez said she'd proclaimed to America, "do not count me out." She said she really felt the performance. Steven Tyler called it the best song she could've picked and predicted that it would mark the beginning of a great career.
Afterward, Skylar said to show host Ryan Seacrest that she'd hoped to show her "full range", and it certainly seems as if she accomplished her mission with an exclamation point. But that doesn't necessarily mean she's safe. Watch Thursday's American Idol 2012 top 8 results show to see if America votes Skylar Laine through to the next round.
