The Mega Millions winning numbers for Friday 3/30/12 have now gone up in value, as they are worth an estimated $640 million before taxes. This adds to the previous record which was set just days ago when nobody won Tuesday's drawing.
Tickets have been selling like hotcakes across the nation since then, with the grand prize value rising as sales have. The latest winning numbers are scheduled to be drawn late night on Friday. A report from the lottery's website earlier on Friday gave the latest prize info, noting that it's the "largest lottery jackpot in world history." The previous record was $390 million. Friday's jackpot started out at $476 million, and continued to rise in value due to strong nationwide lottery ticket sales, according to the official site.
In all actuality, winning tonight's jackpot would get around that amount, as it comes out to around $350 million after taxes. The winner can take 26 annual payments of $24.6 million, or the cash option of $462 million, if they so desire.
Gary Grief is executive director of Texas Lottery. He also serves as lead director for Mega Millions group and commented on the historic jackpot, saying:
"Friday night's Mega Millions drawing will truly be a spectacular event in lottery history and provides an unprecedented opportunity for players to take a chance on a half-billion dollar dream for just the $1 price of a ticket."
There has been major interest in tonight's big drawing across the entire country, with news reports from state-to-state covering the frenzy. Forty-two states and the District of Columbia are eligible to sell lottery tickets, with Alabama, Alaska, Florida, Hawaii, Nevada, Utah and Wyoming the only states that lottery tickets aren't sold. After Friday night, it's very possible that one or more individuals will be millions of dollars richer, winning a life-changing amount of money.
