I haven't been online in quite a while. Not having internet can be a blessing and a hinderance as well.
I wanted to share with the Gather community information about my mother, Barbara Briggs, as I know so many of you had followed her stories and befriended her. She so loved being part of this community.
Sadly, she has been diagnosed with Alzheimers. I began to notice small things at first and mentioned to her pcp that her memory wasn't as sharp as it once was. Her pcp said it could be related to her medications. I insisted that she be seen at the Memory Clinic for an evaluation.
We received the news in December following her evaluation in November, that she had mild to moderate Alzheimers. She is taking Aricept at the suggestion of the doctor at the clinic.
Now that we understand what is going on with our mother we have been able to backtrack and see little things we had never noticed about her behavior that wasn't quite right. Loss of interest in things she once enjoyed doing. One of them was Gather. Other things we realized she stopped doing were crossword puzzles, jigsaw puzzles, and reading books. She did well in masking the symptoms as so many Alzheimer patients do.
At this time we are trying to get her into assisted living. Never in my wildest dreams had I ever thought this would happen to our family.
I am uncertain if Mom will ever be able to return to her writing or the Gather community. Her short-term memory isn't what is used to be.
If you would like to leave a message for Mom, please do so and I will copy them for her to read.
