Jessica Simpson has reportedly gained 50 pounds so far during her pregnancy. Is that healthy for her and her unborn baby? She looks huge and still has a few weeks to go before her due date. She and fiancé Eric Johnson are expecting a little girl.
According to a report from Hollywood Life, Jessica has actually gained twice as much as most doctors recommend, and yes, that can put her baby's health at risk.
"Jessica has put on well over 50 pounds," Dr. Tara Solomon, who is not Simpson's doctor, says. "She talks about eating cheesecake for breakfast and fried chicken for lunch. She is way too big to be working out, so the weight is piling on."
It seems that Simpson's own doctors have told her she could give birth to a ten-pound baby, and with babies that large, complications can occur.
"The problem with large babies is that they can have respiratory problems and problems maintaining their glucose or sugar levels. I usually try to keep my patients at a 25 lb weight gain maximum in order to prevent a possible traumatic delivery with a large child. A pregnant woman should be eating about 1200 calories a day to keep up with baby's nutritional needs. She has gone overboard for sure," Dr. Solomon says.
Hopefully Jessica Simpson makes it through the remainder of her pregnancy without any complications. The amount of weight she has gained also puts her at risk for developing conditions like pre-eclampsia and pregnancy related diabetes.
Jess has joked about being full of fluid, and while that may be partially to blame, she still has gained way too much weight.
"Some women retain a great deal of water during the last month of pregnancy which can cause them to certainly not feel or look their best," says Dr. Patricia Allen, an OB GYN from New York City. "The general recommendations for weight gain in pregnancy are 25-35 pounds."
Have you seen Jessica Simpson recently? She was a bridesmaid in a friend's wedding this past weekend and looked huge while walking down the aisle. Check out a photo of her by clicking here.
One can only hope and pray that both Jessica and her baby emerge from this pregnancy in optimal health. And if she decides to have another baby, it would definitely be wise to heed her doctor's warnings.
