From PBS News last night:
"Right now, we have 1,800 nuclear weapons on missiles and bombers ready to use. We have a total of 5,000 in our active stockpile. The Russians have similar numbers."
How many nukes we have should not have anything to do with how many they have. We should decided our number based on what will save us the most money, and be safe to store, but still threaten Nuclear Hell on others ... as a deterrent.
Would Moscow ever send 1,800 atomic bombs flying to the U.S. if they knew we could send 2 similar bombs to them? If we blew up Moscow and Saint Petersburg then Russia is totally screwed up!
Bringing our nuclear numbers down to 100 is still way too much for us, I think. If we have just 10 nuclear bombs we could still create a horrible Nuclear Hell on earth with that, if we wanted (they blow up a lot bigger now than the WW2 ones on Japan).
And, in addition to the expense, too many of our own nuclear bombs just sitting around - we can't really ever use them, not for real, we're not going to destroy the planet on purpose like that and we all know it. So they are otherwise just atomic accidents waiting to happen, and that makes danger to us!
The whole conversation about it:
