When the American Idol 2012 top 10 performance show airs this evening on FOX, Hollie Cavanagh, Phillip Phillips, Heejun Han and the rest of the remaining hopefuls will each take on a different tune from the playbook of the iconic singer Billy Joel. The near-equally legendary Huey Lewis joins regular Jimmy Iovine as the week's guest mentor.
Specific theme weeks focused on the work of individual legendary artists can make or break contestants. Just a few weeks ago, Whitney Houston week served to cement finalist Jessica Sanchez as a competition favorite among judges Jennifer Lopez, Steven Tyler and Randy Jackson. Conversely, the very same theme spelled doom for 16-year-old Shannon Magrane, whose shaky rendition of "I Have Nothing" served as a serious strike against her chances. She was booted at the close of the top 11 show.
With plenty of beloved and well-known Billy Joel songs up for grabs, which contestant will wind up singing--or attempting to sing--which tune? As usual the young hopefuls have been tight-lipped about their assignments, but some have tweeted excitement over their as-yet-to-be-confirmed picks. Rocker Colton Dixon gushed "Tonight's the night for some billy Joel! Who's excited?! (THIS KID!)" Yesterday, rockin' country girl Skylar Laine shared "I can't wait to perform tomorrow it's gonna be a great show!! #idol"
So which pipes will croon which tunes? Will "She's Always a Woman" or "Just the Way You Are" make the cut? Watch the American Idol 2012 top 10 show tonight at 8 PM on FOX to find out, and then tune in tomorrow night to see who's dismissed from the Idol party.
