I just answered a survey question on this very subject. The answers ranged from 'less than a year' to 'life in prison/death'. My initial response was 'life in prison/death', then, I had second thoughts. I am still leaning in that direction for the simple reason, that a child molester robs a child of their innocence for life.
Knowing this, really makes me not have a lot of compassion for the offender. Yet, I do know that since the child isn't physically dead, that the offender should be allowed to pay his/her debt to society and try to live a better life. Then, there are the cases of children who molest smaller children, mainly because they were abused. It's a cycle that can only be broken through much awareness and making sure these molesters receive proper counseling, not just punishment, before being released back into our society.
What do you think? I know there are some strong feeling on this subject. I'm torn. I guess it should be handled on a case by case basis, but, there are no degrees of suffering for the victims of child molestation. I know they shouldn't get less than a year. I believe they should get no less than one year of court order counseling, while in jail, then, continued upon release.
How much prison time should these people get?
