American Idol cast-off Jermaine Jones claimed shock over his dismissal from the singing competition during an interview with Showbiz Tonight. According to Jermaine, he was uncertain, but not worried, when called before the producers. He says he didn't know what they wanted when they called. However, it didn't occur to him he'd be dismissed for anything other than his show performance.
"I didn't know what was going to happen," he said. "Until they said it, I had no clue what was going to happen...I was shocked but I can't really express what my emotions were at that time," he went on.
Asked to respond to rumors he got the boot for ratings purposes, Jones said he wasn't trying to figure that all out now. However, he made it clear he disclosed his criminal past on application. Therefore, he felt he'd done the right thing from the beginning.
"I circled 'yes' that I was previously arrested...," he said. "You know they did a background check on me and there was some information I had to get a lawyer to take care of before I could even be on the show." He thought that was the end of it.
As for his so-called crimes, Jermaine Jones said they were minor infractions. They happened when he was very young. As for claims there were current warrants for his arrest, Jones said he knew of none.
Jermaine claimed disappointment that American Idol felt it necessary to show his conversation with the producers on the air. Nonetheless, he's appreciative of his experience with the show. "I learned a lot," he proclaimed. "I'm grateful for everybody who's supporting me and loving me," he ended.
One has to wonder about the true reason for Jermaine Jones's dismissal. If he disclosed the pertinent information ahead of time, but was still allowed to take part, it seems unlikely his criminal past was the true cause behind his dismissal.
Some think it more likely Jones got booted for embarrassing producers with lies about his relationship with his father. They felt he was trying to milk a false angle for sympathy votes. Needless to say, that didn't make Idol executives very happy.
However, lying didn't give them enough ammunition to turn loose of the gentle giant. Could that have been when they turned to his so-called criminal past to find the magic bullet? Idol fans may never find out. All they know is that one of their favorite singers is gone. To them, that's just a shame.
