As others have pointed out, the weather is not the climate, but your weather report is questionable. Houston temperatures in late 2011 and early 2012 have been a bit warmer than seasonal (Houston Hobby Airport readings), with over half of the daily high temperatures exceeding normal, and well under half of the daily lows below normal since October 1 (and in the Jan-Feb 2012 period as well). Precipitation for the year 2011 was less than half of the normal (approx. 25" accumulation vs. approx. 55" normal), while for 2012 to date it has rebounded slightly at about 5" above the normal accumulation.

Weather is NOT the same as the climate!

NOAA CLIMATE SERVICES or NOAA can speak for itself, and doesn't need its "cherry picked" data interpreted for them.

Needless to say, an unusual period of excessively warm weather isn't the same as climate change. But this part from your article is - "If you want the factual story, All 11 years of the 21st century rank among the 13 warmest globally since 1880 according to NOAA." Add in that the number of record highs have been outpacing record lows for decades and the trend starts to become clearer.

Those are facts that are hard to ignore. Especially when taken with all the other facts from tens of thousands of scientific studies over many decades by researchers all over the world. The long term trend is undeniable.

And not to be confused with the dishonest cherry picking and intentional deception of anonymous bloggers like C3 headlines, WUWT, and lobbyist supported disinformation sites like Marc Morano's blog.

C3 is one of the most egregiously - and obviously - dishonest sites out there, as I discussed in the last comment to this post a while back. Anyone who doesn't bother to question how a calculated short-term variation off a cherry picked snippet of time is miraculously, unscientifically, and dishonestly, converted into a long-term trend is either profoundly ignorant or massively dishonest.

One really has to wonder how such a simple concept as variation vs trend can be so easily ignored. Perhaps because C3 is citing non-science bloggers with a history of getting even the most basic science wrong - usually intentionally - and are supported by non-science fossil fuel and free market lobbyists trying to protect their short-term financial interests.

In the interest of journalistic integrity, I would like to issue a correction. I stated that it's going to reach 85 degrees today here in central Virginia. That has changed. It's only supposed to reach 80 degrees now. :)

Needless to say, NOAA and NASA both document that the planet continues to warm and will likely continue to warm even faster in the future. Suggesting otherwise is either profoundly ignorant or intentionally dishonest. As is suggesting that constantly setting temperature records means the planet is not warming. As is relying on anonymous web sites that unscientifically and intentionally - and dishonestly - use a cherry picked short-term variation to represent long-term trend.

Variation versus trend

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand the concept. It just takes intellectual honesty.

I'm ready to start planting my garden, my land is not prone to droughts or flooding so when things get crazy at least my food cost won't. We broke records in VT too, maple sugar season may be over by this time next week as the trees start to bud, no snow on the ground, fire risk is high. Yeah, it's the jet stream, but why is it so far north? I'd rather put my money on proactive, 'conservative' actions to minimize the risk and potential damage. Isn't that what conservative is supposed to mean?

Chris recently said on another post that they're conferring with civil engineers, and how they couldn't possibly have anything to do with climate science. These are the professionals who are going to provide solutions to mitigate the impact. They must understand the science to determine the potential thrust of a problem in any given area and provide adequate reinforcement to diminish the damage.

They don't want any of that. They'd rather see bridges, roads, communities destroyed because they think it will prove their point that the severity of weather has been caused by climate that man hasn't sufficiently controlled. They're only interested in controlling what they think they can control that they can't, the cause, not the effects. They knew before Katrina happened that it might happen, and they talked about reinforcements to the dam and possibly building another, but it was too expensive so they didn't do anything. I shouldn't say they didn't do anything. I mean, they''re busy building green cars to cut down on that nasty CO2 so Katrinas won't happen. Like I said, at some point...

It is rather shocking, Chris, to see the willful ignorance of many of the amateur denialists out there in the blogosphere. Those who use non-science blogs that rely on dishonest manipulated cherry picking and unscientific - and intellectually bankrupt - extrapolation of short-term variation into long-term trends. And doing so when they (i.e., 3C headlines and the non-science bloggers and lobbyists who fund them) know that what they are saying is lying about what NOAA and NASA are saying with the totality of the data.

Continuing to rely on dishonest non-science sources when they know they are dishonest non-science sources is by definition dishonest.

Over 100 years of well-known physics, tens of thousands of peer-reviewed research publications, and massive empirical evidence from multiple lines of research ALL unequivocally point to the undeniable conclusion that man's activities are the main cause of the continued warming of the planet.

Because of all of this evidence, all of this undeniable and unequivocal empirical evidence, all of this massive amount of information gleaned from 100 years of research - because of all of this the scientific community agrees that the data unequivocally tell us the planet is warming and it is mainly due to our emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels. Which is why virtually every climate scientist, every major scientific organization, every bit of the totality of all of the data absolutely and unequivocally led to the irrefutable scientific consensus.

Who disagrees? Almost no climate scientist. But a whole lot of people, almost all non-scientists, who identify themselves as politically-motivated ideologues who write Op-Eds in non-science venues like the Wall Street Journal and Forbes magazine, who think "science" is anonymous blogs that intentionally and unmistakably cherry pick data and then lie about it, who intentionally can't seem to understand the most basic scientific principles, and who somehow want all of the entire body of climate science to go away in favor of dishonest and willful ignorance of the facts.

There's a word for people like that. Actually, there are probably several words.
