Supernatural season 7 is bringing back a character that was believed to have been killed off in the beginning in episode 17, "The Born-Again Identity." However, there are many questions surrounding Castiel's return. So what's been revealed so far?
SPN Season 7 Episode 17 "The Born-Again Identity" Spoilers
The official description of the episode has already revealed that Castiel's some sort of healer when he returns, and Dean comes across him when he's looking for help after Sam breaks and ends up in a mental institution. However, now TV Guide has some more about Misha Collins' return, including a promotional photo showing Dean and Castiel. Dean's driving a car (hopefully the Impala returns soon!) with Castiel in the passenger's seat. A promo out for episode 16, "Out With the Old," and this episode shows that he's not in his trench coat—which makes sense, since things have changed and since Dean picked it up out of the reservoir in "Hello Cruel World."
Collins has revealed that Castiel "has changed," and with "Sam [being] in really dire straits, Dean is definitely looking to lean on the character for help." Will Castiel be able to help even though he's different? He had promised Dean back when he tore down the wall that he would fix Sam. Will he be the one to do that, albeit much later than he planned? Although when Castiel was last seen, he was doing what he could to try to redeem himself after letting the power of the purgatory souls and desire to take down Raphael get to him, there are probably still going to be some issues between him and the Winchester brothers, but with what's going on when he does appear in Supernatural season 7 episode 17, that does seem like a matter to address at another time.
It sounds like there are more big things coming up for Castiel, as according to Collins, "There's a kind of big experience that is being kicked off at the end of my first episode. Cas is going to go through yet another transformation and on to another kind of struggle and journey. Once again, he'll be put through the wringer." Collins is going to be appearing in "at least three episodes," beginning with the March 23 episode "The Born-Again Identity." The last time he went through a "transformation" and proclaimed himself the new God, things didn't exactly turn out well for him (there was death and destruction, which resulted in the Leviathans being freed). Will that be the case again here, or could this be what gets Castiel back on track? Will this transformation have something to do with the Leviathans—for example, could it lead to him being able to help Sam and Dean take care of them for good?
TV Guide also asked Collins if he could return for an eighth season, assuming the CW renews the series (and that's looking more and more likely): "There's no reason why it couldn't happen." He adds that he's been brought back before, pointing out that death on this show doesn't mean the end of a character. That's certainly true. There are plenty of ways to bring back characters—just this season saw the return of Jo (Alona Tal), who died in season 5, while her mother Ellen (Samantha Ferris) showed up in an episode last season. That's one of the good things about this show—you know the series could always find a way to bring a character they killed off back. So even if this arc for Castiel ends up with him dead (again), it wouldn't necessarily mean the end of his character.
