What Is Happening Today On Gather ~ Monday March 19, 2012

 I have so much to tell you in this issue.  There are going to be some really fun things happening in the gather community in April.  So you will not want to miss the updates later this week. 

 

Just today alone, I have seen four posts that  do not allow comments until they are approved.  I am curious to see what the rest of the community think about these types of commenting choices.

Discussion questions:

  • What do you think of posts that only allow comments to appear after they are approved by the author?
  • What do you think of posts that do not allow comments by anyone except friends?
  • Do you comment on posts that only allow comments to appear once they are approved by the author?

Next set of questions for discussion:

Andrea Pearson said in her post that she and her husband were watching The Lord of The Rings series.  Allen H. said in the comment area of that same post " The Lord of the Rings shows my homeland's,
New Zealand's scenery off very well!"

  • Did you know that the Lord of the Rings movie was filmed in Allen's homeland?
  • Do you pay a lot of the scenery in movies?
  • When you watch the movie again, will you view the scenery with Allen on your mind?

Where To Find Things On Gather

Do you often get confused when you are looking for something in particular? You are not alone, it seems that we all forget where things are when we don't access them on a daily basis.



There is a wonderful post written by Gather support Chuck McGuire. It has just about everything you need to know in a simple to read format.

 

Need Help

In an attempt to get your questions and problems taken care of in a timely manner, Gather has a staff of customer support agents just for your problems. However, keep in mind that they cannot help you if you don't tell them what is going on.

Please refer all your questions, concerns, and feedback to the official Gather HELP FORM.

The Gather staff will respond (if necessary) by email. The Gather Help Desk will be used for important announcements so feel free to check it out from time to time.

"What do you think of posts that only allow comments to appear after they are approved by the author?" I think that's the author's prerogative.
"What do you think of posts that do not allow comments by anyone except friends?" I think that's the author's prerogative.
"Do you comment on posts that only allow comments to appear once they are approved by the author?" I run across that rarely, but have no objection to comment in that situation.

Hi Connie! I've read a few posts from friends that are apparently receiving hate comments which is so innapropriate. I do think a few of these people have simply left Gather. That's a shame, so I do understand their desire to approve a comment or just allow friends to comment. I hope we won't have to do the same.

When I read comments on others' posts, they always sound fairly positive,(something I have had problems with several times earlier on) with the exception of a few politcal posts, and that's very few because they usually don't have opposing views. Some have more versatility, the problem there is you can be glued to this and neglect to do your daily activities.

Watched all the extras on the DVD on how the Lord of the Rings was made. Yes I knew it was filmed in New Zealand. Beautiful country. And I have yet to feel so strongly against someone's comment that I've deleted one. So I allow all comments but I understand why some authors may feel they have to approve comments before they are posted. Doesn't bother me at all.

I don't set mine to approve since I do have a huge issue to one I can delete, but I have never had to delete on either.

but...I don't post racy discussions.

If I was posting topics that I would expect to get heated I may approve posts just to help make sure everyone stays civil, but I would post most of the replies as long as they didn't swear or rude and such...

I accept all comments on my posts--don't mind the site has the option, but I won't be using it with the kinds of posts I write.

I really liked the Lord of the Rings series--looking forward to The Hobbit. I get distracted watching movies--do pay attention to things like setting, background details, camera shots, etc. I think it's helpful from a writing standpoint, but sometimes I wish I had an on/off button to keep from analyzing a movie that's better off being watched for the fun of it.

I don't use the "approve comment" option either. I welcome all opinions. If we all thought the same thing, this world would be pretty dull. LOL

However, after reading the comments on this post about hate comments, I can understand.

I did delete a comment once. It was by mistake and I felt so bad about it.
I emailed the member and made my apology to her.

I just love The Lord of the Rings movies. I am viewing the final one right now. I too view the scenery and the buildings. I am in awe of the wonderful workmanship of the ancient buildings. I have always had a love for the land.

I don't usually comment on them when the comments must be approved. Once in a great while I do but not too often. I do still read them though.

I don't mind if someone wants to approve comments before they appear. To me, it says that the subject of the post is really important to the writer. I respect that and keep my comments serious and respectful.

I'm not sure about the reasons for limiting comments to friends only. In a political post, for example, the writer might want no conflicting opinions, yet why not? It is through the exchange of ideas that we all learn. If a writer only wants validation of his opinions, the comments might as well all say "Ditto".

I may be the only person on the planet who has not seen the Lord of the Rings movies, but if I do, I will be sure to check out the scenery:)

Wow! I am shocked! LOL

I love the movie. I wanted to view it tonight while I make back up CD's of my computer. (Next time I do it on an external hard drive like I do my husbands). I could only find the third, Return of the Kin, one in the DVD collection so I am watching it. LOL

I just love the movies.

I am curious, why have you not seen them?

When the first movie came out, my daughter was in high school and went to the opening dressed in costume with her friends. I guess I figured it was a kids' movie.

While I'm at it, I may as well confess that I've only seen one Twilight movie and the first Harry Potter. I'm just not a big fan of fantasy or vampires;)

I think the author has the right to choose who comments on their posts. If the post is interesting to me I will comment and go away wondering if it was interesting enough until I get to the next post.

In the land of geeks where I live, everyone knows LOTR was filmed in New Zealand; that's where the director Peter Jackson hails from. And the scenery in the movie was breathtaking.

I understand myself, why a Gather member would want to approve comments first. Too keep spam off of their posts, and also have notifications when someone comments so that they know when/how to respond

If an author makes a habit of always setting their posts so that comments must be approved than I feel while it is their prerogative it is also a form of censorship and I rather not be censured. I do understand that some people may comment harshly and the author prefers not to deal with it. If someone only sets this option on something that is sensitive in some way than I will stop by and read it. The premise of Gather is to start conversations so feel approving comments limits the conversations.
