I listen to Rush almost every day for at least part of his three hour show. I had heard him discuss this issue twice before, and both times his main point was that $3000 per law school stint for birth control equalled an awful lot of sex.
Since on those occasions last week Rush had said nothing particularly untoward beyond that, when I heard the story that he had used the terms "slut" and "prostitute" I did not believe it. There was even a story about it earlier this week on my local TV late night news. They did not refer to the terms used, nor was there any video or audio of Rush using them.
When I finally did see the video, on Greta last night, it was clear that Rush had repeated the view that $3000 for birth control equated a lot of sex. Except he asked it as a question, something like this: If a woman says she needs $3,000 for birth control, that she wants money for sex, what would you think? ...That she's a slut or a prostitute.
So unlike Bill Maher speaking of certain conservative female politicians, Rush did not just say "Sandra Fluke is a slut and/or a whore." His use of the terms was part of a logical progression he was following. The conclusion was not entirely logical to the premise, since she is not getting the $3k from a john or a lover directly for the sex, but for birth control which is only necessary if you have sex. Rush realized that later himself, thus in his own mind an apology was required.
Meanwhile, we're still waiting for Bill Maher to apologize for his significantly more objectionable earlier remarks about Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann, and/or for HBO to drop their sponsorship of his show. I expect those things will happen...the day after Hell freezes over.
