'New Girl' 'Injured' Recap: A Health Scare

New Girl season 1 continues with episode 15, "Injured." While Nick faces a medical scare, Winston refuses to get a new car.

Nick Needs Tests Done

While playing a game of football, Jess tackles Nick, and he's in too much pain to get back up. He slowly makes it to his car and refuses to see a doctor since he doesn't have insurance. He finally agrees to see Sadie after he hits Winston's car trying to drive home. Winston brings his car into a mechanic, but with all the damage that was already done to this car before Nick bumped it, it's really time for him to get a new one. Winston refuses to.

Sadie's an OB/GYN, but it's not like Nick has much of a choice. After she examines him, she unofficially gives him pills (for menstrual cramps) for the pain. However, while he's drinking water, she notices a growth on his thyroid. He knew about it, but he hasn't had it checked out. He has no choice now.

Nick has excuses why he can't go for the ultrasound he needs, but Jess tells him he's going. When Nick goes to work, Jess, Schmidt, and Winston sit at the bar watching him, and Schmidt even goes in for a kiss. Nick sends them to a table. He pops another pill. When he joins the others at the table, they're all upset because they think he has a thyroid tumor. The three start crying, and Nick reassures them he's fine. Then Jess shows him the diagnoses of a thyroid tumor, with a warning of death.

Does Nick Have Cancer on New Girl?

Schmidt seeks comfort in his own way in Cece. Jess tells Nick a joke, and he tells her that joke is why she can't talk at his funeral. He argues that his funeral is when he gets to the shine and says that Jess doesn't know how to be real. The five sit around the piano, drinking, and Cece joins Schmidt and Nick in rapping. Jess interrupts, getting real. She wants to know what he wants to accomplish, but he argues that he's not the type of guy to do something if he doesn't know what will happen.

When he brings up being the guy guarding wallets when everyone jumps in the ocean, they head to the beach. Despite his argument that it's cold, he takes off for the ocean. When Winston mentions that this is Schmidt's chance to see Nick's penis, Schmidt takes off after him.

Once he's in the ocean though, he says it was a stupid idea and quickly runs back to get his clothes. When Jess asks if he's okay, he says he's not. He started off the day looking forward to playing touch football, and now, he might have cancer. Schmidt stupidly suggests that Nick could lose some weight.

Schmidt tells Cece he's never been through anything like this, but she has. Her father died when she was 12, and "the only way to get through it is to get through it." Nick tells Jess she was right and he has to start doing things. He tells her he likes her and knows he won't remember it in the morning. The next morning, everyone wakes up on the beach and wakes Winston up in his car. While Winston complains about getting sand in his car, it continues to fall apart.

Everyone's waiting for Nick after his ultrasound. When he comes out, he tells them he doesn't have cancer. Schmidt once again kisses him. When Nick goes to pay in cash, he finds out the others split it. Back in the car, Nick asks Jess what happened the night before. She says nothing did. Winston's car won't start, so they get out to walk, and Winston takes off his license plate.
