While Queen Elizabeth has obviously taken Kate Middleton under her wing as a new royal, the word is out that she hates the Duchess of Cambridge's thrifty clothing choices as well as her somewhat short hemlines.
Earlier this week, Kate Middleton accompanied the Queen and Camilla Parker Bowles on an outing where she wore a blue coat she got for "next to nothing." While the public praised the newlywed princess for being economical during these hard economic times, it seems the monarch is not thrilled with her frugal shopping habits.
A senior figure with the royal family said, "There's a danger in the Duchess being seen as always hunting out bargains. She is, after all, a royal princess and it's not necessarily extravagant to dress like one." In fact, Queen Elizabeth is "mildly irritated" that the media has turned Kate Middleton into such fashion icon in the months since the royal wedding.
It seems that the Queen and the other royals do not realize that this frugal, down-to-earth behavior is part of what endears the Duchess to the rest of the world. She is helping save the royal family in part because she is seen as young and realistic. Of course, the princess will accompany the Queen and Phillip to Leicester to kick off the Diamond Jubilee tour, so they have some understanding of Kate's appeal.
What do you think? Is it unbecoming of a princess like Kate to be frugal while shopping, or is she simply proving that she is a modern royal?
