American Idol 2012 continued February 29 with performances by the top 12 girls, including back-to-back offerings by country gals Skylar Laine and Baylie Brown. Which singer came out on top with the judges and which is in serious danger of getting the boot?
Up first to duel it out was 18-year-old Mississippi native Skylar Laine. After showing the audience around her hometown, she shared that she hoped to use her musical talents to help save her family's financially troubled store.
The energetic Reba McEntire-Miranda Lambert hybrid took the Idol stage by storm with a powerful, growling version of Faces' "Stay with Me." She bounced around dressed in a glittering fringed number and literally shook with excitement as she performed. It was easily one of the best performances of the night, and she simply exuded a charming, undeniable air of confidence.
Not surprisingly, the judges loved what Skylar brought to the mix. Randy Jackson dubbed her "the rockin' country girl" and likened her to Reba mixed with Kelly Clarkson. He also loved her song choice. Jennifer Lopez said "it's like Tina Turner went country" and called it "a great performance." Steven Tyler called her a "pistol" and encouraged her to keep it up.
Another country gal followed immediately afterward in Texas native Baylie Brown. She introduced America to her grandpa, whom she called her best friend, and said she couldn't wait to show off her talents to the world.
Baylie's rendition of Lonestar's "Amazed" was the polar opposite of Skylar's energy-infused jumpfest. Dressed in a long peach gown, she remained in a central location on stage and crooned her tune in sophisticated fashion. She looked graceful and elegant, but the vocals lacked in energy and refinement.
Steven called her "very pretty" but didn't care for the song choice. Jennifer called the performance "a little shaky all the way through" and wished she'd "had a better moment." Randy thought she'd "never seized control of the song."
Will the judges' impressions shape America's voting and send Baylie Brown packing? Will Skylar Laine advance to the American Idol 2012 top 13? Watch the March 1 results show to find out.
