The Cubs now being under the control of Theo Epstein are in the process of cutting larger salaries and rebuilding the farm system. This however does not mean that they will not be competitive. They have done a fine job of adding some young talent like that of 1B Anthony Rizzo whom Epstein traded in a deal for Adrian Gonzalez before the 2011 season as a member of the Red Sox brass.
Impact Fantasy Hitter is Starlin Castro. If his motor can continue to run as well as it did last season the Cubs should have no problem scoring some runs early. He has good speed, can hit for average, and plays the field well. Could be a Top 5 shortstop.
Impact Fantasy Pitcher is Matt Garza. He is the most intriguing pitcher for two reasons: 1. He could develop into an ace and possibly win 18+ games. 2. If he produces early this season he could be dealt to another team for a haul of prospects to enhance Theo's farm.
Expect: 16-8, ERA: 3.19, 195K, 1.15WHIP
Sleeper: Brett Jackson has a shot to win the starting centerfield spot and if he does he can sure up another spot up the middle and add a capable hitter to the number 2 slot.
The Cubs are "rebuilding" without throwing in the towel. They will sacrifice this season to build up there team from the ground. Should finish in fourth place.
