The Independent Spirit Awards 2012 invites indie films and the people who make them to come forth and be recognized. The atmosphere is that of a more relaxed gathering than, say, the Oscars, which goes all out for a formal extravaganza.
But the indie film awards on Saturday, which took place on Santa Monica beach across town from Hollywood and Highland, is a time when a casual person can be in casual dress and yet feel very much at home.
Best Supporting Actress winner Shailene Woodley was so casual, in fact, that she went barefoot on the red (purple) carpet.
The Descendants star said to E! Online's Marc Malkin, "They're like two sizes too big. I stuffed toilet paper in them but they hurt."
And then she carried on, explaining, "But I have flats," she continued. "They're in a bag with my friend at the end of the [press] line."
Talk about getting a foot in the door.
In the case of this Independent Spirit Award winner who ultimately was recognized as Best Supporting Female, both of hers were very much there and on show as she hobbled down the show's catwalk.
However, by the time she hit the stage for her prize, she was wearing those aforementioned black flats.
Smart thinking. It's going to be a long weekend, Shailene Woodley, so welcome to the wonderful world of award shows where you have to have the right spirit to get through it all, Independent Spirit Awards included.
