New Girl continues with "Bully," during which Schmidt and Cece try to hide their hookups from the others and Jess deals with a bully at school. Meanwhile, Nick tries to find the hidden meaning behind a cactus from Julia.
The Last Time Was Not the Last Time
Though Cece is left with a feeling of self-loathing, she can't stop sleeping with Schmidt. They're keeping it from the others, but Jess knows Schmidt was with the same girl twice as he sneaks Cece out. No one knows who it is, and they're surprised that he's keeping her identity a secret since that's not like him.
Jess' class is getting ready for a science fair, and Brianna's very confident in her robot arm winning. Nathaniel asks if he can have lunch in the classroom since he's being buried. Jess says she'll help him. Meanwhile, Nick's trying to decipher the hidden meaning of a cactus from Julia. He thinks she doesn't think he can take care of a normal plant and is going to break up with him. The others think he's insane, but he calls it a symbol of their relationship...moments before he drops it on the floor.
Cece's already downstairs when Schmidt texts her. As he walks out of the apartment, Jess tells the others about how she helped Nathaniel. She had him join her in a song about him. That wasn't a good idea, since now the bully has now just turned on her. There's an online video of the song making fun of Jess.
Schmidt and Cece need to find somewhere to have sex because the others are upstairs and they can't go back to her place. He turns down car sex because he can't show off all his moves. Jess thinks reasoning will work with the bully, despite Winston telling her it won't. Schmidt calls Jess and tells them to look out the window at a crescent moon. Somehow that works and he and Cece sneak by to his room.
Nick's obsessing over the meaning of the cactus and leaves Julia a series of voicemails, each worse. He even pours beer on the cactus at one point. It's probably a good thing she didn't get him a normal plant. Though Cece tells Schmidt it's really over, she can't leave because Jess is in the living room. Instead, she returns to Schmidt's bed. Jess discovers Brianna uploaded the video and tries to "open a dialogue." Brianna just brings up her love life, lack of boyfriend, previous relationships, and says her "happiness seems like a mask." After she leaves, Jess breaks her robot arm.
The real meaning of the cactus on New Girl
After hearing Nick's seven messages, Julia realized that she might have meant something with the cactus. She thinks they should break up. He doesn't appear to be handling it well, as he walks up to Winston holding the cactus and a six-pack and asks him to join him at the beach. He's in a very strange mood and seems to be just on the edge of breaking down as they bring Jess scissors when she asks for help fixing Brianna's project.
Cece tells Schmidt to stay in the car when she stops by a party. They'll have sex after. He realizes she's ashamed to be with him, but talks her into going out for breakfast in public. At the science fair, Brianna's arm doesn't work (of course), and when she tries to blame Nathaniel, Jess steps forward and takes responsibility. Winston calls Brianna "the spawn of Satan." Brianna's mothers want Jess disciplined. This is when Nick finally breaks down. Poor Nick.
Tanya tells Brianna's mothers she'll be watching Jess closely, but once they're gone, Tanya tells Jess she's a "real teacher now" since she's a "kid hater." In class, Jess tells Brianna she has to deal with who she is and respect it—and makes her sing a duet with her.
Cece and Schmidt do have breakfast together—granted, where no one they know can see them—and she makes it clear they're not in a relationship. He explains that he wants to tell people because he thinks she's the "dopest, flyest, smartest, ballsiest, bitchiest, truly terrifying woman" he's had sex with in a long time. She tells him he can tell the waitress, and he makes an announcement to everyone in the restaurant they're having sex.
Jess brings Nick a plant and tells them being weirdos (her singing, him being a plant killer) is part of who they are. Jess and Brianna's duet is now online and Jess is getting some pretty good comments—from herself.
