This is a great question...here is how to do it!
Now, I am not going to seriously give anyone step by step instructions on how to break into the DMV computer systems so that they could give and take drivers licenses as they please, change addresses, erase traffic offenses, and who knows what else. Nor is this a step by step guide to breaking into a banks computer systems and dropping millions of digital dollars into an account and live off of that for the rest of your life in countries where you could not be extradited back to the United States, or wherever else and the same rules apply!
No...this is merely both educational and interesting: so, you have decided that you want to become a bank robber of the online sort, and that you want to digitally break into a bank and take a large sum of money from money already in an account at that bank. You will log into the bank system remotely from your secret hideout, create a new bank account, hack into a nearby wealthy account, make a transfer of 20 million dollars or so to your account, disconnect, move to Mexico, and lay low...they may never catch the error.
You could live out your dreams in paradise, and around the world where you cannot be arrested or returned, and no one may ever even catch the financial difference if you hit a very large and important bank system.
Anyway, as an IT professional and instructor, I know of a few credible stories of real life hackers breaking into Visa accounts, grabbing millions, and not going to jail until they were caught some ten years later! Wow almost got away with it! I am also an IT security expert and trainer, so here is roughly how you would do it (for the curious):
1. Forget about what you have seen in movies. If you want to rob a government bank account or a big business bank account of some sort, you will not be sitting at home at your home computer with your Internet connection when you commit your robbery. If you want to rob a bank you need to become an employee for some months. You need to then get very familiar with the computers, computer networks computer software, employee habits, and see first hand what obstacles you would be up against!
(I am not suggesting that anyone actually do this...such is the irony of this article! Most of this is all illegal - getting a job at a bank only so that you can sniff around their computer systems, computer networks, computer software, and especially their administrative, operational, and computer security software, not to mention hopefully still an administrative password is all risky business - obviously!)
2. Knowing now everything there is to know about the banks internal computer network infrastructure, remote terminal connection possibilities, IP subnets, security software, security measures, intruder detection policies, and...like I said...hopefully an administrative user account and password, or even built in back doors you setup yourself...you kindly submit your resignation, make yourself disappear from their eyes, and take all of this back to your secret hideout!
Whew...
3. Now, from an undisclosed location you have never been to, and only plan to visit once, for about 20 minutes, you should log into the bank remotely after hours and do your business - there are all sorts of theories as to "covering your tracks". Yes - it is easy enough to cover your tracks until someone discovers the money missing or accounting error - but, after that, if they suspect computer fraud, they will find your undisclosed location. And depending on how good you are, probably YOU!
(If you are good enough to get in, get out, and be long gone, and leave no way for the trail to lead to you PERSONALLY, you MIGHT succeed.)
4 With 20 million dollars or more laundered and invested retire to your planned destiny of wealthy living and travel, or not. Let me know if you succeed...It has all been attempted before...good luck! (Ha, ha...)
