A Bakersfield, California man has been arrested for allegedly skinning, cooking and eating stray cats. 35-year-old Jason Wilmert was first arrested on charges of animal cruelty earlier this week. But a new charge was added: a rarely used ordinance against using pets as food.
Neighbors had been noticing some strange things before the arrest, including a rise in the number of missing pet cats in the area. Others reported hearing shrieking animals and the smell of burning mystery meat coming from the man's house.
Police were finally called when a neighbor actually witnessed Wilmert holding a cat by the tail, apparently skinning it alive.
One of the arresting officers was quoted as saying, "Well, you know what, there's some strange things in that house. And, yeah, he's eating animals."
Can this be true? How could someone do this? There are stories of people from other cultures, particularly in Asia, where eating cats and dogs is considered normal. A delicacy in fact. But such a thing is rarely reported here in the US.
Hopefully, this guy likes prison food and will have to eat some of that for a good long time...
