On Thursday, February 9th, the Department of Defense announced that it was expanding its range of positions available for women to serve in the United States armed forces, with over 14,000 positions being added. This change has been in part due to the expanding role women are taking in armed service and in part due to the changing role of the military in combating terrorism and counterinsurgencies, and primarily lifts restrictions on women being assigned to positions within or located near combat units.
