Department of Defense Wants More Women In Uniform

On Thursday, February 9th, the Department of Defense announced that it was expanding its range of positions available for women to serve in the United States armed forces, with over 14,000 positions being added. This change has been in part due to the expanding role women are taking in armed service and in part due to the changing role of the military in combating terrorism and counterinsurgencies, and primarily lifts restrictions on women being assigned to positions within or located near combat units.

Been there, done that! This is a nice way for job seeking women (without children) to make a living. I stress "without children" because these military contracts often takes women to places where children cannot go and I'm old fashioned enough to believe that a working mom should not be away from their children a year at a time, as often happens with the military assignments. Many disagree with me on this but in most cases Uncle Sam tries to be considerate with assignments for women with children.

I had a mother tell me the other day that my daughter should NOT be in ROTC...no girl should. I was soooo angry, but I held my tongue.

The military is a nice career for some people. I didn't like it, but that was a very long time ago. It was during a time when married women with children couldn't even join the military. Times have changed.

They may not say it plainly, but some of this has to do with downsizing the military and manpower with boots on the ground I'm sure. To be an effective fighting force they have to make use of what they have efficiently, and have less choices in whom can serve what/where.
