NCIS just explored a whole lot with Gibbs in episode 200, "Life Before His Eyes," and while it showed some changes for Tony and Ziva as Gibbs wondered "what if?" there will be some material coming up for those two in upcoming episodes.
NCIS Season 9 Spoilers
According to Entertainment Weekly, there's going to be "an episode that will reveal why Tony 'became a detective and ultimately an agent,' and a big Ziva episode 'where she looks at her life and the path it's taken.'" The episode about Tony should be a fun one. Last season in "Baltimore," fans got to see how he went from being a Baltimore cop to an NCIS agent (something many have been waiting for since the JAG episodes that introduced the series), and while that had to be a highlight of the season, now it's going to be time to go even further back in Tony's life to find out why he chose this career path.
With the introduction of Tony's father (played by Robert Wagner) in recent seasons, viewers have learned more about him than previously, but there's plenty that's still a mystery about this character who has been around for all 200 episodes that have aired of the show and the two JAG ones. Before NCIS, Tony bounced around a few police departments, as noted in season 1's "High Seas," but he has settled down on Gibbs' team and it doesn't look like he's leaving any time soon. But what led him from being a frat boy (which was much more evident in the earlier seasons) to Peoria PD in the first place?
Meanwhile, NCIS season 9 has showed more about Ziva outside of work, as she was ready to marry Ray—until it turned out he was the murderer they were looking for. She was getting ready to settle down and actually have something big in her life outside of work, but once she found out what Ray did, she started questioning whether a marriage and children are in her future. Now she has to figure out where she goes from there, and it makes sense that she thinks about what's happened in her past. She's had quite the life, and interestingly, "Life Before His Eyes" showed what it would've been like for her if she had never left Mossad, if Ari had never killed Kate. She was still the cold-blooded assassin everyone knew her as when she was first introduced.
Gibbs' guidance has been crucial for her, and you do have to wonder if she'll decide, at the end of the "big" episode coming for her, that she could one day be ready to settle down like she had mentioned to E.J. in "Housekeeping." It does make sense for her to push that idea aside after being hurt by Ray, but there's still plenty of time for her to change her mind when she finds the right guy—whether that's Tony, as some fans are hoping, or someone else.
Are you looking forward to these NCIS season 9 episodes? What do you think put Tony on this career path? What do you see in Ziva's future?
