Well, Angela got her cast off....at least temporarily. I took her in to the orthopedic yesterday afternoon. She had been picking at the cast on and off for the last few days, and she knew it was coming off yesterday. OMG....the smell was enough to knock me back a few steps, though nothing can be worse than one of PHer's. He cleared a room and then some...seriously. The doc had to close off the room and move us elsewhere, since the smell was so bad....but I digress.

See, Angela's just peeling the fiberglass right off.....The orange duct tape is holding pieces of it on, that broke when she was trying to do push ups wearing the cast. No, don't ask...it's Angela.

Ah yes, she now spends part of her time with me just ignoring me. Oh well..she's a teenager. Music is definitely more interesting then me. LOL

The cast guy came in and cut Angela's cast right off. I think he's cut 3 of Angela's 4 casts off over the years.
X-rays were taken and looked at....and the doc moved, pushed, and pulled Angela's wrist and hand. She was in tears by the time he was finished! What does this mean??? It means that Angela now has to go get a high contrast MRI. She's not looking forward to having dye injected into her wrist and hand....not that I blame her. It looks like she has tendon and/or ligament damage...and we need to see what's going on.
I'm currently waiting for the doc to call with the MRI appointment, as he couldn't get her in right away. After the MRI, one of three things will happen:
1. She stays in a brace for the next 4-6 weeks and we see if it heals
2. She goes back to the ortho for another cast
3. She gets sent to a hand specialist for consultation and possible surgery.
I'm hoping for #1.....maybe....but #2 would be safer for her. With the brace, she's more likely to re-injure it. It's just wait and see. Unfortunately, her hand and arm are in a brace currently, and she's asked for pain meds the last 2 nights. That's not good.

I can only imagine how much pain that poor child is in. Bless her heart. Be sure to let me know what happens. You know how to reach me. :)
By the way, I had no idea they made colored casts. I have never seen anything but white.
I used to cringe when patients would come in with their casts trashed and duct taped--in the days of plaster casts before fiberglass. So I knew just what to do when we were 500 miles from home in Barbara's home town and my walking cast broke; expecting my cast to be removed shortly after our return home anyway, I went to a store and got a roll of duct tape, taped the cast, wrapped magazines around it and taped again, and I was able to continue to walk on the cast (and drive our VW microbus the 500 miles home).
I do hope it can heal without surgery.
Oh, First Sarg yelled at her yesterday for doing push ups. Angela just didn't want to be sent to the Sick, Lame, Lazy group.
No, I'm not even going to ask about the push-ups. It's a teenager thing...
I hope Angela's heals on it's own.
Good luck Janet.
