The sixth episode of Jane by Design is all about looks, looks as in style that is. The episode starts off with India presenting her new line to Gray, in her new (and completely loving it, thank you very much) position as Creative Director of Donovan Decker. India makes the mistake of asking Jane what she thinks when Jane can't help laughing (at African neon?). Jane then makes the mistake of telling her. India asks Jane if she intends to do a trend report, and Gray thinks that's a simply brilliant idea—which would be great except that Jane has no idea what that is.
After floundering around the office (apparently India is intimidating to everyone because no one wants to help her), Jane settles on a plan of action and asks the guidance counselor, Rita Shaw, if she can interview students about the inspiration behind their looks.
"Wear who they are" is what Jane boils down what looks like really uninspired video, but Gray loves it so all to the good. Unfortunately, India is still on the warpath, especially since Gray told her to scrap her line and start over and Jane did not help her when she called to ask for a status report. What India doesn't realize is that Jane is also floundering, but then, she probably wouldn't care either.
Billy caddies for Lulu's dad again and is upset that he will not listen to his golf suggestions. The judge tells Billy that maybe if he didn't look the way he does, well, then maybe he could take him seriously but as it stood? Not so much with the serious. Billy tames the faux hawk and preps it up and all the girls swoon. At first Jane is not really on board with Billy's new look. Okay, not so much not really, as not all really, but Billy points out that he is the best friend ever and that Jane needs to step it up a lot to get even close, and Jane realizes the truth of this and comes around. A little bit anyway. It's all to the good, however, as Billy caddies for Lulu's dad again, and this time? He listens. What's the message? Lose the faux hawk and be taken seriously.
After Jane successfully delivers her trend report, India realizes that one of the boys in the video looked very familiar. The familiar face? Billy's. Because right before India got fall down drunk at the trunk show ("The Birkin")? She came face to face with Billy and this immediately sets her on the exact wrong path but also on a madcap "will she or won't she be found out" storyline filled with lots of Jane dashing into cramped quarters with Billy and her crush, Nick. In a should never happen to any girl moment, the two mean girls in Jane's life collide and sneer "nice shoes" and "nice bag" at each other, but with Billy's new preppy look, he is able to successfully play off India's suspicions.
Billy and Jane heave a sigh of relief only to have India and Jeremy (playing Billy to India's Jane) stumble across Jane making her presentation on Pearl Harbor. But! Jane Quimby is quick on her feet and manages to turn her presentation into a "thank you, students, for agreeing to be interviewed" spiel (might have put her valedictorian track in jeopardy). India decides to just forget it. As they are walking away, Nick gets up to give his presentation, and Jeremy sees him, which starts the gears in his head since he met Nick at the end of "The Finger Bowl".
On a side note, Ben asks Rita out for a drink and she says yes! And they seem to really like each other! Also? Completely unclear as to how old they are, but Rita does mention that Ben walked away from a baseball scholarship to take care of Jane.
Oh, and Nick kisses Jane. Perhaps Jane by Design will be turning its focus a bit more on romance in coming weeks.
