1940 "Bugs" Hardaway, an illustrator at Warner Bros., submitted a drawing for a rabbit character to his bosses and labeled it "Bugs" Bunny." His drawing wasn't chosen, but the name was for the beloved cartoon character.
"Bugs" was also a NYC colloquialism for someone who wasn't playing with a full deck. I always thought that was where Bugs got his name,since voice genious Mel Blanc gave him a Brooklyn accent.
