Taiwan President Honors Duty Free Store Employee

It is quite interesting that my mom had just recently lost her purse with about US$200 in it, and the TV News has been reporting several stories of honest store employees returning the large sum of found money to the owners.

Yesterday an employee at the Duty Free store in the TPE Airport found US$11,000 and returned to the owner. Again, when the owner wanted to give the employee some money as the reward, she declined to take the reward. It was so significant that the Taiwan President called the employee personally and thanked her for being a good citizen.

One funny little side story was that when the employee told her mother that the President called her, her mother told her to "hang up because it may be a scam". Can you imagine if you get a call from President Obama to thank you for being honest?

Sadly stuff like that doesn't happen here. Even if someone did return it. (not many people are that honest though) but it's not such big news that a president would call. Maybe a local news report but I don't see much more then that ever happening here. It would be interesting though if it did and I'd be skeptical too.

I think in general, people are more honest in America. That's why being honest is not such a big deal. But in Taiwan, most people are not honest, and that's why being honest becomes such a big deal.
