"Marriage is an institution. So is Alcatraz." Never did the words of comedian Jeff Dunham have more power than watching the ex-wives of Kobe Bryant and Kris Humphries rake in the cash and the gigs. Is marriage also a business?
Kobe tries to hold up Los Angeles Lakers while Vanessa Bryant juggles TV deals
One could say $75 million is one of the many reasons to stomach the marriage to an NBA star for ten years. Vanessa Bryant claims she endured 105 instances of her ex-husband cheating. Many people wonder though if the number/s got exaggerated and if she really deserves such a healthy chunk of the money she didn't earn. Renowned music artist Drake made such comments in a recent song, claiming Vanessa wasn't the one shooting in the gym every day. He later apologized for the comments but were they out of line? Kobe Bryant continues pouring his body and mind into keeping his Los Angeles Lakers afloat against a surging group of talented young teams in the NBA. Meanwhile his ex-wife juggles three new mansions to choose from and now an apparent list of TV opportunities including the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. No one wants to assume the worst about a person but even if Vanessa considers accepting any of the offers, it immediately makes her look like she was always in it for the money and the fame. It's hard to admit, but the marriage could have been just a business venture.
Humphries battles for NBA life and for apparent sham union with Kim Kardashian
No former couple has captured sports media attention like Kris Humphries and Kim Kardashian. Together, they posted a 72-day marriage that ended so fast it could out race a meteor falling to the earth. Since then, the two have settled into a not-so-kind series of media jabs. Humphries, however, soon went the silent route and re-signed with the New Jersey Nets to further his NBA dream. He has since improved his skill set and solidified his spot on the Nets roster with career best numbers. Kardashian meanwhile did not offer that same vow of calm. Her reality television program took weekly pot shots at Humphries over the quick ending of their marriage while she plays the victim and, quite honestly, reaps the rewards with lucrative endorsements and guest appearance deals. No one can prove if she lured Humphries into the marriage at all, but one report insists she lured the Nets big man in with a $19 million promise. That doesn't sound like a love-first marriage proposition.
Organizations like the NBA probably meet stranger stories than ugly divorces. That doesn't change the fact that Kobe Bryant and Kris Humphries stand front and center as two examples of how divorce affects high earning athletes. Vanessa Bryant and Kim Kardashian continue soaking up new deals, but would those deals exists without their names linked to their famous ex-husbands? That's left for the courts to decide.
