The Scarlet Pimpernel

I had my doubts about reading The Scarlet Pimpernel, which was first published in 1905. Besides, it's British. I do like the 1934 movie with Leslie Howard.

However, since the seniors book club chose it for this month, I dutifully bought the Dover Thrift edition and plowed into the book.

I like it!

Even though I already know the identity of the scarlet pimpernel, it is filled with suspense, intrigue and love.

A great read!

It's about rescuing French nobility from the Reign of Terror.

I remembered reading them at school when I was about thirteen - and then I was reminded when saw them for free dowload onto my Kindle from the Gutenberg Project. I've re-read them all in the past year. Some (the first two novels) are better than others - and the ideas were getting scarcer as the series progressed.

At 13, I fell in love with Percy Blakeney - and thought his silly wife was a fool!
