Actor Ryan Reynolds gave co-star Denzel Washington a black eye on the set of their movie Safe House. The Canadian actor thought the accidental shiner would mark the end of his career. What happened?
Washington, famous for saying "King Kong ain't got nothing on me" in Training Day (2001), where he won an Academy Award for Best Actor, has perhaps met his match.
According to a report from People magazine, both actors were in the middle of filming a fight scene in a moving car, when Denzel Washington's face ran into Ryan Reynolds' errant fist.
"Ryan gave me a black eye. There's a scene where I reach over to try and choke him where I have my handcuffs on, and we were flying around in the car. He wasn't actually driving the car, but it just happened as I was reaching forward he was flying back. He went, pow! I never had a black eye in my life, but I can't say that anymore!" said Denzel Washington during the promotion of Safe House.
Ryan Reynolds is an established actor in his own right, but when it comes to the top of the food chain, Denzel Washington is among the titans of Hollywood A-listers.
Even Reynolds realized the enormity of the situation after giving Washington the shiner. In fact, he believed producers would ask him to leave the set. After all, one doesn't go around giving black eyes to a two-time Academy Award-winning actor, and not pay a heavy price.
"That was my early retirement. I've given Denzel Washington a black eye and I should probably go home. I'm glad I was your first. If it had to be anyone, it was an apologetic Canadian," joked Reynolds.
The good news is no one was badly hurt, except for perhaps one actor's ego. In the end, both men were able to laugh about the matter while continuing to promote their blockbuster film.
Will Denzel Washington's black eye from Ryan Reynolds damage the good looks of one of the "World's Sexiest Men?" Not likely. Washington once said, "Beauty is only skin deep."
