This episode of Chopped brings four chefs who were "just this close" to winning the $10,000 prize on earlier episodes of the show. Today they are here to redeem themselves and possibly walk away with the title of Chopped Champion.
The four chefs are faced with the appetizer portion of the challenge with mystery ingredients of Sweetbreads, Dried Dates, Red Malabar Spinach and Strawberry Popsicles. There are 20 minutes in the first round, and the chefs get busy. Three chefs pan fry the sweetbreads and one chef decides to grill them and make a taco with them. As usual there is one chef who is all mouth who tries to psyche out the other chefs. But the first chef Chopped is the chef who cut herself on the last show because she gave too much on the plate for an appetizer round.
Three chefs remain for the entrée round and the mystery ingredients are Leg of Lamb, Kochujang (a Korean chili paste), Rainbow Carrots and Root Beer Schnapps. The leg of lamb is gigantic and for a 30 minute round they must work quickly. One chef pan fries the lamb, another chef grills them and the other is making lamb stew. The chef Chopped in this round is the chef who made the stew, because she forgot the schnapps in her recipe.
The two chefs who remain have mystery ingredients for the dessert round of Fresh Pasta Sheets, Plum Tomatoes, Basil and White Chocolate. With 30 minutes one chef makes basil ice cream while the other makes a fruit salad using the tomatoes and various fresh fruits. The judges discuss the three rounds and the judges decided that the chef who made the fruit salad was the winner and not the chef who tried to psyche out the competition. The winner was Chef Sammy Davis Jr. who won the $10,000 prize and bragging rights on Chopped.
The judges for this episode were; Amanda Freitag, Chris Santos and Marc Murphy, all famous chefs and restaurateurs.
