TLC's controversial show Toddlers & Tiaras is making headlines today because of a lawsuit that one mother has filed. Ironically enough, it is a lawsuit claiming that three media outlets supposedly tried to sexualize little 5-year-old Isabella Barrett as she was performing to "I'm Sexy and I Know It" by LMFAO. The mother of the child, Susanna Barrett, is suing for $30 million against three media outlets.
The three media outlets have responded to the lawsuit, claiming that her mother pressured her into performing the video. In addition, the articles also "brazenly attempt to sexualize" the girl by "claiming she was gyrating in a nightclub and singing about her sex appeal." The child was wearing a pink tutu and is seen bouncing in the deejay booth as she sings to the crowd in the video that is causing the drama, according to NY Daily News.
The show Toddlers & Tiaras has been controversial for people who find that it is wrong to show off the children in certain situations. While some believe it is acceptable for the children to perform however they want, others find that it is exploitation of children who don't know what is right or wrong. And now, something backfired and a mother is lashing out.
"As a result, Isabella is now perceived sexually, erotically and pornographically," and the articles "have placed Isabella in serious physical danger, attracting the attention of others who would seek to sexualize a child," the child's mother believes. "She did not understand the concept of sex, let alone 'sex appeal' and could not have been singing about her own sex appeal," the suit says. It is not so much about what the 5-year-old child understands, but more about what the mother allowed the child to do in front of the camera.
