NBC is planning a spin-off for The Office starring Rainn Wilson. While a Dwight Schrute show sounds amazing, what does it mean for the future of his character on the show?
Deadline is reporting that the ratings struggling network is seriously considering producing a series about the adventures Dwight Schrute as a beet farmer and bed and breakfast owner. According to the Deadline source Rainn Wilson and The Office executive producer/showrunner Paul Lieberstein have been tossing around the idea for years. The source close to the show explained, "A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it's been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors. At its base it will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together." If the show is picked up it will likely premiere midseason in 2013.
While a new show all about Dwight certainly sounds like guaranteed laughs, it's hard to imagine The Office without his antics. What exactly would Jim do without Dwight to harass? Since Steve Carrell made his exit from the series last year, the show has arguably gone downhill and losing Dwight Schrute could just be the final nail in the coffin. There's no question that Rainn Wilson is deserving of a show of his own, but at what cost? Then again, maybe it's about time to say goodbye the Scranton branch and hello to the beet farm.
