Star Wars: the Old Republic is a title some would consider game of the year. The game has recently won an award not for just having great gameplay but also for its ease of use for people with disabilities.
Over the weekend, AbleGamers named SWTOR their 2011 Mainstream Game
of the Year. AbleGamers, a website that help preaches gaming accessibility, praised the movie-based game for features such as subtitles, customization of the keyboard and/or mouse controls, and maps that are colorblind friendly. It's nice to see more accessible games coming out although this Star Wars game wasn't really intended to be so. Hopefully this will encourage developers to focus on making game more playable for people with disabilities.
The 2010 winner of AbleGamers Mainstream Game of the Year was Forza Motorsport 3. Like the current winner, its accessibility was more of a coincidence than anything else. Hopefully that will change and publishers will release more games that anyone can play regardless of disability.
