Former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards is seeking a second delay of his criminal trial, after a delay was already granted due to the sheer mass of documents his attorneys needed to review. In August, Edwards's defense team stated that they needed more time to go through 400,000 pages of documents and interview 125 witnesses, along with the fishier reason that his eldest daughter Cate would be taking a two-week honeymoon in October following her wedding, leaving her unable to care for her younger siblings. Of course, the implication that a multimillionaire would be reliant on his daughter for childcare is ridiculous. The delay was granted, pushing the trial's start date from October 2011 to March 2012. In the interim, an additional 100,000 pages have been dumped on the defense team, and they're crying foul again, claiming they still need more time. They have cited other large cases like this one that have taken longer to try. Additionally, they have stated that their client has a life-threatening heart condition.
Judge Catherine Eagles, who granted the postponement after replacing District Court Judge Carlton Tilley on the case, is in touch with Edwards's cardiologist. She confirmed that a second trial postponement is in fact doctor recommended, as Edwards has surgery scheduled in February. CNN states that he "must provide the court with a written medical update by February 28, according to court records." With this news of Edwards's poor health, as with any other aspect of his life story over the past three years, the real losers here are his four children: Cate, 29, Emma Claire, 13, and Jack, 11, who have already lost their mother, Elizabeth Edwards, and his youngest daughter, Frances Quinn, with videographer Rielle Hunter. Hunter is largely relevant to this trial, as the six felony charges Edwards faces are for $925,000 in misappropriated campaign funds (and lying to authorities as part of the cover-up) that were allegedly used to keep his affair with Hunter hidden during his 2007-2008 campaign for president. John Edwards is a former senator from North Carolina.
There is no reason he should not get a delay, justice is not going to fall by the wayside. If he did something wrong he will pay for it. Funny how all Republicans are jumping on this but you have no criticism that none of the Republicans are seeking charges or trials against corporations and CEO that were involved in the banking scandals or have anything to say about the high salaries and bonuses of some of the most incompetent and corrupt people in the country?
Compared to the real problems of the country what Edwards did is rather minor, and certainly not urgent.
