My daughter has a house in the country, and she suddenly has an infestation of mice. She called out the exterminator, but the mice are smarter than the traps. Does anyone know of any good ways to get rid of mice?
She didn't want to use glue traps, but now she is desperate. She lost all her boxed food, and can't go shopping until she rids the house of the little monsters. Help!

Best to set out traps after the kids go to bed... then get up earlier than the kids to get rid of it... I didn't want my children to look at it.
Since we have a cat, we've not had the problem. Some areas are prone to having them...like near stores..
I tried glue traps. They didn't work very well. :(
Another trick is to get an empty bucket and build a little ramp up to the top of it on the outside with anything available. Lay a paper towel all the way across the top of the bucket and put a tiny piece of food in the middle. When the mouse goes to grab the food, he goes DOWN and can't get out. Of course this needs to be done where there are no pets, especially cats.
I had an infestation a couple of years ago when they started building something on the previously vacant lot next to my apts. The glue traps were horrible, but they're the only thing that worked for me.
* Take steel wool and plug up all your holes that the mice are getting in - don't forget around the drain pipes and such that come into your house, usually through the basement. The steel wool hurts mice's teeth and they won't chew on it.
* Glue traps are AWFUL. The best mouse traps I used were the plain old traps that come down and snap their necks. They're also cheap, and you can bait them with the food the mice have already ruined by chewing through the packaging.
* Get a cat. Nothing was more effective than my new kitten Mazda. She had my house mouse-free after about 2 weeks. Train your cat to be a terrific mouser. As soon as the cat catches the mouse, praise the cat and give it a delicious treat - I used these incredibly smelly little dried fish treats that my cat just LOVED and she'd go hunt for mice so she could get a "fishy treat". While the cat is eating her treat, you can flush the mouse down the toilet.
Most important: do NOT freak out when a cat puts a mouse on your bed. The cat is trying to "honor" you by sharing its prize with you - praise your kitty, give it a treat, and flush the mouse.
* If you have big mice, get a plunger for the future clogged toilets. ;-)
my only suggestion is cats---
