Today, most therapists who use past life regression induce trances in subjects or use hypnosis to get them to recall past lives. Dr. Stevenson did not do that, however. He simply talked to children who could spontaneously recall events from their own past lives.
Many incidents which were documented include the story of a 6yr old boy who claimed that he was a man called Satnam Singh from a small village in Punjab.
The man came from a village that the boy named as Chakkchela; the boy claimed to have lived there as Satnam Singh, even though he actually had not been there himself. Additionally, the boy could describe Chakkchela in minute detail.
The family tried to dissuade the boy from telling people about this, but he continued to claim that he was Satnam; he also gave the name of this man's father. He also said that he had been killed in his past life as he was coming home from school in a motorcycle accident.
This claim was investigated, and sure enough, a man named Satnam Singh had indeed been killed in a motorcycle accident on the way home from school. In addition, other details that were very personal were revealed by the boy, and also proved accurate. Further still, Satnam Singh's handwriting was compared to that of the young boy's, and was found to be completely identical.
Another subject of Stevenson's was a little girl, three years old, by the name of Swarnalata. She said that she had lived before, and had been a young woman whose name was Biya Pathak pastlife.
She went on to describe the house she had lived in and took her father to the property which had belonged to her in her past. She told her father that she had lived in the area and that they could get a better cup of tea in her house than on the road.
Her recollections were completely validated when she recognized the young woman's brother, and addressed him by a pet name the young woman had called him, from a group of nine people free past life readings.
Stephenson lists dozens of these cases in his documentation. He also says that if an injury is caused by trauma in the last birth, it can become a birthmark in the next one.
One subject certainly had this happen to him. He recalled that he was his deceased maternal uncle, and a scar on his head proved to be a match to the knife wound his uncle had died from, also on his uncle's head in the same location.
Another case from Stevenson's files was very astonishing as well; with that, a little boy claimed that he was a man named MahaRam; MahaRam had been shot and killed at very close range, in the chest. What was amazing was that this young boy displayed birthmarks on his chest that looked like gunshot wound scars.
There are many psychiatrists; most notable among them is Dr Brian Weiss who is considered to be the father of past life regression who do believe in the claims of rebirths. Science as a whole however is still very skeptical.
It's also true, however, that people who have past life regression therapy often suddenly are rid of phobias and fears they've had their entire lives.
