What you didn't get for Christmas as a kid

Is there anything you wanted for Christmas but you never got.

Because it was too expensive or impractical, maybe (a pony!), or not gender appropriate, or nobody was paying attention, or something ...

I wanted a Shirley Temple doll and a Barbie doll when I was young. Never got either. We were dirt poor.

I always wanted a Little Tykes car. I'm not even sure I ever told my parents I wanted one. Oddly enough, I did have a pony when I was a kid and I still ride horses. As soon as I have a kid and they're old enough, they're getting one of those cars. :)

I cant think of anything off the top of my head... I no my sister was the one that always wanted the pony. But she got it, never took care of it and my dad got tired of doing it all for her so he ended up giving it away about a year later... Lol

I wanted a Teddy Ruxpin and a Barbie doll house when I was younger. Instead my cousin got Teddy Ruxpin and my friend got the doll house lol.

Barbie houses were so cool. My little sister got a homemade wood one from a friend of dad's and it had an elevator and everything.

I did in fact want a horse, we had two Boxers, the neighbors way down the road had horses. My dad never seemed to acknowledge any conversations about a horse. We had 5 acres, certainly enough money yet, I never got the horse, a kiln for my clay projects, but no horse! I still want a horse!

I never got my horse, Thomas, I would love to be able to save older horses (provide a shelter for abandoned or abused horses) since I am retired now and the thoughts I have about horses are a bit more mature.

We were probably lower middle class, but so were most of the people in our area, so my sisters & I thought that we were like everyone else. I got the Lionel train that I wanted, & the Red Ryder BB gun & the bike, over the years. When I think back that we were born during the Great Depression & what our parents sacraficed for us, I am eternally grateful to them. Most of all, there was family & love.

I was raised in the opulent 60s but often heard about the family members that lived on nothing but bread and lard for awhile during the Depression ...

My parents never complained about what they went through, but I know that it must have been tough. My dad was employed by the WPA & my grandpa & uncle were bootleggers, so we got by, lol. One great thing about the 60's Peter, you had the best music ever - I still listen to it.

I can't think of anything I didn't get that I asked for. I was easy to please; and I don't actually recall asking for anything in particular... I was the oldest of 5 kids and realized from the get go we were downright poor and material things didn't matter much.. all I really looked forward every year were the sugar cookies my mom made!
We always had a lot of toys to open and many 'family gifts' (ie; board games.. later a Nintendo game system or a new computer). My folks were big fans of the BX's lay-a-way!
I never asked for a pony.. we lived on base and they were not allowed to have one! ha
And when one of us reached a certain age, we would rec'v a particular gift.. when I was 10, it was a ten-speed bike (then when my sisters reached 10 y/o they'd get one, etc.) My fave when I was 15, I got my first leather jacket... my sisters all got theirs that same year too though.. I was kinds peeved since they didn't have to wait like I did! lol

The Bike is such an important rite of passage! I got mine in the summer, just because kids should have one, I guess! Boy the bike crashes I had, LOL, and barefoot with no helmet (we didn't do helmets back then).

I always wanted a horse. Never got one. But, for Good Friday when I was thirteen and already over 5 foot tall, my dad got me a pony. LoL, my legs drug the ground by then.

I wanted an art set, with paints, brushes and a lot of stuff. My parents couldn't afford it but I did get one of those paint by number ones. I still love those things!!

I can't think of anything
I always had expensive taste. When I was very little I could look in the Ward's catalogue and identify the "Best" alternative--"Good, Better, Best"--without reading the copy. As I got older I discovered that there were even bester things that Ward's didn't have. Before junior high I wanted a top of the line Rawlings baseball glove, a real pro model, not the ones most kids, including me, had. When I was twelve I wanted an SLR camera or maybe a Hasselblad. When I was in high school I wanted a McIntosh tuner and amp (tubes of course, there was no solid state then) with Altec Voice of the Theater speakers.

I didn't get any of them. Somehow I survived without them. I got regular Chanukkah gifts. I liked them. As an adult I never got any of the things on my kid list. I do have a couple of big Grundig table radios that I got for cheap on eBay though. They work great. That was my second choice in high school.
I know, it sounds like an amphibian with a compulsion for conspicuous consumption. Actually I'm not. My wife often says, "You'd be happy in a one room apartment with all your stuff in boxes." when we disagree on home furnishings. Actually she's right. :)

No. I don't think asking for stuff for Christmas was in our family culture. I got toys when I was little and later mostly books and clothes and they even managed to get me music I liked once or twice. I was very easy, I suppose.

My peave was that I would be very specific like the year I asked for a boy baby doll, I got a Betsy Wetsy girl doll just like my older sister wanted.....so I gave her (the doll) a haircut and changed it to a boy doll, next year for Christmas I DID get my boy baby doll and did I love him! Another year I specifically asked for roller skates and cried when I did not get them.....Mom asks why I think I need roller skates, there are no sidewalks to skate on at our farm! I reply that I planned on rollerskating in our basement so I got them for my birthday in July!

Only one thing that I never got, but it wasn't a pratical desire, is my Grandmother, she had died when I was 12 and I always wanted her back.
