it's damn silly this Gingrich crap. Teach poor black kids pride by handing them toilet bowl scrubbers at minimum wage? Fire a custodian (probably the dad of one of them) to make room for them?

They are not going to learn to value school work by being paid a couple bucks to scrub urinals. Life does not work that way.

As for Gingrich, he is trying to have it both ways. He is trying to look like a hard ass to the racist right wingers that just want to be punitive against black kids. At the same time he is trying to show moderates and independents that he wants to help the poor.

It's just silly posturing, not about the real world at all.

At one time there were no child labor laws, that's why we passed them. Child labor laws were needed, are needed and will always be needed.

Hmm...You might want to read a history book. The post WWI migration to northern industrial cities resulted in similar conditions to what we have now. The main difference was that discrimination in housing kept black people in tightly circumscribed areas, discrimination in hiring limited employment opportunities, and Jim Crow was just as strong in the north as in the south.

Interesting. Newt speaks of poor children going to work and some people interpret poor as black. News flash - it is not necessary to be black to be poor nor is it necessary to be white to know the value of work. Regardless, it is not the place of the children to support the family by earning a paycheck and we should not even be having this discussion. We need work for adults.

The whole of the tp has been saying that. They absolutely know that there are thousands upon thousands of jobs going unfilled because lazy lefties want to suckle the government for a living. Sure wish they'd identify all these empty jobs. It would be a boon to those who keep hunting for work with no success. Silly things don't even realize that their own tax deductions are a form of government welfare for those who can well afford to give to charity, have a mortgage, have babies, pay medical bills and on and on.

Apparently it's ok to give billions to wealthy corporations which refuse to take responsibility for their own bad decisions and it's ok that corporations fail to pay any taxes on billions of profits. It isn't, however, ok for the poor to collect a few thousand a year or fail to pay taxes on the pittance they receive since the poor are sucking the lifeblood out of the treasury. Somedays I think we should have just let the damned banks fail and started over. It would have been awful but mankind has made it through a world-wide depression before and we would have managed somehow.

I believe the fear was that if we didn't bail them out, then economies all over the world would also tank leading to such a bad worldwide depression that the thirties would look like prosperity in comparasion. And then the scoundrals gave their exec's major bonuses with taxpayer dollars. Bums should have paid at least as harsh a price as Joe Q. Citizen paid. It did please me that some of those responsible were so worried for their personal safety that they hired bodyguards. I don't think they kept their guards for very long since they proved to be unnecessary.

Newt's suggestion is overly simple, maintenance work often involves the use of powered equiptment like lawn mowers, paints, polishing compounds and chemicals such as chlorine. Letting kids do this type of work is a bad idea if I ever heard of one.

I'm just curious why laissez faire presidents like Coolidge didn't solve the black ghettos back in the 1920s when they reached their present form.
You really do need a history lesson from a real historian, not the partisan hacks you've been reading, Mickey. Wherever you lived all your life, you didn't have any contacts within the black community, obviously, which doesn't surprise me too much.
That trend started in the late 50s, not after Johnson's Great Society reforms, in the first place, and if Johnson's Great Society Welfare program were at fault, we should have seen an increase in marriage when welfare was pretty much gutted as a continual way of life for anyone at the end of the Clinton Administration, which we have not. The continued poverty and discrimination supported by the Republican party, wherever possible, and the great influx of drugs, and the devastatingly addictive nature of crack cocaine, particularly, is the true culprit, for both the gangs, and the continuing destruction of the family unit. There has been an upswing in Black marriages, albeit a small one, in recent years, which gives a little hope for more stable family units. Some researchers cite the Obama family example as being one factor in that upswing, by the way, Micky
